The Full Story Part I - Who is Greta Malmin?
Owner and Principal, Greta Malmin, is a Registered Interior Designer with 20 years of experience specializing in Multi-Family interiors. She has loved art, design and building since childhood. As a daughter to a cabinet maker; she grew up in workshops and spent her early years using scraps of wood from her father's projects to build treehouses and forts in her country backyard. Later on in Junior High she rejected the Home-Ec option for elective and instead chose to be the only girl who took shop class. The shop teacher encouraged her in her passion for figuring out solutions to design problems by enrolling her in a state competition for engineering students. She and her partner took home first prize in the structural challenge. She also realized how much she loved the arts and took sculpture and pottery classes throughout high school. These humble beginnings in working with 3-Dimensional elements led her to explore a career in Interior Design. The Art Institute of Houston offered a program for Interior Design which was a natural first step toward her chosen career path. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005, she went to work for an award-winning Interior Design firm, M.Ford & Associates, Inc. Specializing in Multi-Family interiors. She quickly advanced from a Junior Designer to a Project Lead. 8 years into her career at M.Ford; she and her husband welcomed a daughter into the world and 4 years after that she realized that live-work flexibility was mandatory in her new role as a mother. Not wanting to leave a career that she had so much passion for; Greta decided to pivot to a work-from-home format. This was unconventional in a pre-Covid world. However, with the support of M.Ford & Associates, and a GIANT leap of faith....Malmin Design Group, LLC was born.
The Full Story Part II - Humble Beginnings
Despite being born out of the desire for Life-Work balance, Greta also realized there was an obvious service gap in the industry for Interior Designers. Namely...Construction Drawing Services. Experienced, proficient, organized draftsmen and women who understand how details and millwork are constructed, were few and far between. The first 4 years after its inception, Malmin Design Group exclusively provided support to fellow Interior Designers in the form of Drawing Services. Eventually, MDG was asked to provide Interior Design services once again for Multi-Family. We now provide Full-Service Interior Design, Construction Drawings and Project Coordination for a variety of sectors. Although we have a focus primarily in the Multi-Family industry, we have also worked on light commercial and residential projects. No project is too big or small. We love a good challenge!
